Growing cauliflower

Home | Gardening | Growing cauliflower

There is still time to plant cool weather vegetables. In our mild, Bay Area climate, cauliflower can be planted in late winter for harvest before summer.  A second crop can be planted in August or September for late fall/early spring harvest.  See our handy vegetable planting guide!

Space cauliflower transplants 1 1/2 to 2 feet part in rows and leave 3 feet between rows. Set the transplants slightly deeper than they were grown originally. Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Keep plants growing vigorously with regular deep irrigation during dry periods and one or two feedings of fertilizer before heads start to form.

Cauliflower plants grow upright, often reaching a height of 2 1/2 feet. Use starter fertilizer for transplants. Provide ample water, especially as the heads develop. Watch for aphids and cabbage worms.  Protect from aphids and cabbage worms by using a light weight row cover such as Harvest Guard.
