Mums & Fall Flowers

Home | Gardening | Mums & Fall Flowers

As the garden turns to fall, plant material changes in our stores. Pansies, violas, snapdragons, stock, and nemesia all arrive, but mums really signify a new season. Garden mums (Chrysanthemum morifolium) are perennial, but they’re also a quick solution for fall color. They’re hardy plants that will bloom throughout the fall, year after year.

Different varieties and colors will be available at Sloat Garden Center throughout the fall. Stop in and take a look!

A few care basics to keep them blooming:

  • Deadhead spent blooms as they fade. Snipping off old flowers redirects the plant’s energy into new buds instead of setting seed, keeping your mum flowering longer.
  • Give them plenty of sun, whether that’s a garden bed or a container on a sunny step.
  • Come spring, pinch the plants back once or twice.
  • Give plants room to breathe. This matters even more if you’re gardening closer to the coast, where morning fog and cooler, damp air can make mums more prone to powdery mildew.
