Rudbeckia: our plant pick for August

Home | Gardening | Rudbeckia: our plant pick for August

For late summer, we admire the Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia). Bright and glowing, cheery yellow to gorgeous gold, burnt sienna, rich maroon and mahogany, some varieties even sport more than one color. The petals surround the unmistakable dark brown to black “eye.” Bees and butterflies love them, making Rudbeckia a wonderful addition to any pollinator garden.

This truly American wildflower thrives in prairie grasslands to open forest glades throughout our country, loving the heat of late summer. Though tolerant of drought, average watering keeps them looking their best.

As the flower ages, the eye takes on a cone shape similar to that of Echinacea. Delay pruning the plants back at season’s end. The dried seed heads left standing through the cooler months are a good food source for chickadees, finches, and wrens, bringing even more life to the garden.

Blend Rudbeckia with ornamental grasses and warm hued pansy or viola for a stunning combination. They make good, long-lasting cut flowers too!
