Scaevola, also called Fan Flower, appears to only have half its petals. This plant is named for the legendary, Roman hero Gaius Marcius, who thrust his right hand into the sacrificial fire in an act of brave defiance towards the Etruscan King, Porsena. Marcius earned the name Scaevola (left-handed) after his return to Rome. Like Marcius, Scaevola endures the heat. Long blooming and trailing, this plant is useful in hanging baskets, containers, and window boxes. Most often seen in blue and purple, but pink and white varieties are also available.Â
