Verbena is one of the most popular plants to grow in containers, window boxes, hanging baskets and retaining walls in full sun. Verbena is loved by butterflies and hummingbirds and is deer resistant. Available in shades of pink, purple, blue, red, peach and white, verbena will flower from spring into fall. This plant is relatively pest and disease free.
The most popular types of verbena are the trailing types, but there are types that can grow up to 3ft high for the perennial beds. Remove blooms as they fade to encourage a longer blooming period. Pair verbena with petunias, calibrachoa and geraniums for contrast. Historically they have been grown for medicinal purposes such as for oils and for herbal teas.
